Bacopa monnieri occurs in wide parts of the tropics and subtropics, growing above and under water in lakes, rivers and ponds, even in brackish water. This species is somewhat variable, with different forms. The "standard" Bacopa monnieri has an upright, sparsely ramified growth habit as submerged plant. The light green leaves are 1-2,5 cm long, obovate with round tip and narrow base. Leaves and stems are relatively thick and fleshy.

Bacopa monnieri grows relatively slow under aquarium conditions. CO2supply is not absolutely necessary but enhances the growth, as for all aquarium plants. Nutrient deficiencies are not readily visible except that the growth slows down. In tanks with high CO2 concentration and strong lighting, regular macro- and micronutrient supply is necessary. Under sufficient light, the "hammered" knobbly pattern of the leaves develops more pronouncedly. The addition of CO2 enhances growth but is not absolutely necessary. When continually supplied with sufficient nutrients via the water or the substrate, C. crispatula var. balansae develops into a beautiful plant. It grows fastest and lushest when nutrients supply is ample, especially nitrate, phosphate and iron. This variety prefers hard water, thus a good supply of calcium is important, too - as for most representatives of the Cryptocoryne crispatula group. There should be sufficient light, i.e. 0.6 - 1 watt per litre. Under less light, the lower parts of the plants tend to die off and rot away. However, please keep in mind that under more intensive light the plant will also need more iron and micronutrients. Faded, pale plants are a sure sign that Didiplis diandra suffers from an iron deficit. It is not absolutely necessary to add CO2, however, fertilising with CO2 results in considerably faster and healthier growth. Nitrate, phosphate and potassium have to be added in regular intervals, as well as iron and micronutrients, which Didiplis diandra craves. When kept in optimal conditions and under lots of light, Didiplis diandra shows colours from orange to red hues. Older leaves keep their dark spot pattern but their basic colour changes to dark olive. It tolerates hard and alkaline water, but a nutrient-rich substrate and at least medium light intensity are beneficial. It has the tendency to grow out of the water with long-stalked aerial leaves. When these are cut off, shorter stalked submerged leaves may follow, but a full-grown, strong plant will continue to develop emersed foliage after a while. If this is not desired, the plant should be replaced by a young one. However, the creeping runners of Glossstigma have opposing leaves (2 leaves per node), those of Marsilea are alternate (1 leaf per node). Moreover, Glossostigma leaves posses a distinct midrib, whereas the veins of Marsilea are fan-shaped, comparable to the leaves of a Ginkgo tree.

G. elatinoides is relatively easy to cultivate given that it has enough light and CO2. Light intensity should be at least 0.5 watts per litre. Under sufficient light, Glosso forms runners quickly, covering the entire ground after a relatively short time. Under insufficient light, however, it tends to grow out long. For good growth it needs sufficient nitrate (5 mg/l or above), phosphate (0.5 mg/l or above) and sufficient iron as well as micronutrients. Nitrate deficiency leads to yellowish leaves, and the older leaves are shed before time, phosphate deficiency results in a significant growth reduction, and the plant assumes a distinct dark green hue. Iron deficiency leads to transparent spots on the leaves.

If you buy Glossostigma elatinoides in trade you will probably get the emersed form. When planting, make groups of three to four stems, and wait for submersed growth, which sets in after about two weeks. Then you can cut off the new, submersed leaves and replant them into the substrate. Make sure to bury them in the ground entirely, and just free the leaf tips from the substrate. If you follow this method, given that there is sufficient light, CO2 and nutrients, you will get complete ground coverage after a few weeks.

Its low growth makes G. elatinoides an ideal foreground plant. Its leaves of the emersed as well as the submersed form are pinnatilobed to pinnatisect and are thus highly decorative. At the end of these multiply ramified shoots, upright sprouts develop. They can remain rather short for a longer period of time, looking like a rosette then. The stems are of a brown colour and rather tough.

H. pinnatifida does ok under moderate light, however, more intensive lighting helps it grow more compact. A compact growth habit can also be furthered by regularly removing the shoot tips. A good nutrient and CO2 supply is recommendable. This Hygrophila is apparently quite susceptible to a potassium deficiency, whose symptoms are small needleprick-like holes in the older leaves.

The substrate seems to be quite unimportant. The plant forms a rather small, not very deep root system. When pulling the plant out of the ground you will see that the roots attach to sand or gravel grains. The growth rate differs quite a bit depending on the conditions the plant is kept in and its developmental stage. Under moderate light and a limited supply of nutrients and CO2 it grows and reproduces rather slowly, however, under intensive light and an ample macronutrient and CO2 supply, the upright shoots of strong plants may soon reach the water surface. In open tanks, they will probably grow above the waterline and develop flowers after a relatively short time.

This unique Hygrophila is probably most effective when planted in small groups in the middleground of the aquarium, in front of a calm background, where its special leaf form and pattern stand out best. Especially when the plant grows rosulately stout its growth habit reminds of a fern. The very low-growing plantlets developing at the end of the runners can be planted in the foreground in groups. As H. pinnatifida has a rather dark colour spectrum, neighbouring plants with bright, intensive red hues can easily upstage it.
H. pinnatifida surely offers even more possibilities for aquascaping that have not yet been detected, especially regarding its ability to attach to rocks or driftwood with its roots.

*Pictures are not the actual plants you will receive, but a sample representation.

Care

Medium

Usage

Epiphyte (growing on hardscape), Semi-emersed plant for open tanks, Midground, Foreground, group

Light

Medium to High

Co2

Not necessary but beneficial

Growth rate

Medium

One special characteristic of this variety are the white-coloured leaf veins. They are not the symptom of a nutrient deficiency, though. It is assumed that a virus prevents the tissue around the veins from producing chlorophyll. This virus specialises in this variety only and thus poses no danger at all for the rest of the aquarium plants. This variety of the so well-known robust Asian H. polysperma has become a very highly coveted aquarium plant.

This undemanding red-coloured plant is very interesting as it is probably the easiest plant of that hue in cultivation. It grows under almost any conditions. Temperatures between 18 and 28 °C, pH values in the range of 5 to 8 and a water hardness of soft to hard are tolerated very well, which shows how adaptable this plant is. It does not require lots of light and CO2, however, when provided with these factors its reddish colour gets more intensive. Iron also plays an important role for the reddish hue, too, as the plant colour tends to fade to shades of pale white if there is insufficient iron in the water column.

Like so many other fast growers, this plant tends to grow horizontally along the substrate. In many cases, this habit is caused by lots of light and helps the plant to cover as much room as possible before it resumes vertical growth. You can easily prevent this phenomenon by planting the stems very densely or by increasing the phosphate (PO4) level in the tank.

Hydrophila polysperma "Sunset", or "Rosanervig" is a red stem plant with lots of potential. Its low demands and the possibility to cultivate it as an epiphyte on rocks and wood made it a firm asset in the aquarium hobby. Moderate light is more than sufficient, Java fern grows well under stronger and weaker lighting as well. Like Anubias, Microsorum pteropus develops a creeping rhizome on which the roots and leaves grow. This rhizome can be fixed to roots or driftwood with string, and after a few months it attaches to these surfaces with its roots. This plant can also be attached to the back or the side glass of the tank with suckers. This moss may tolerate temperatures of up to 30°C, however, in cooler water of around 24 °C it grows faster and looks healthier. Whereas it has a more compact, lusher growth under higher light intensities, it is darker and more spindly under lower light. Fertiliser and the addition of carbon dioxide help, but are not necessary. However, if you prefer a lush, healthy-looking moss with strong growth in your aquarium you should at least contemplate the use of an iron fertiliser.

This moss soon attaches to the substrate it grows on with its rhizoids (root-like filaments; the small, hairlike dark brown tufts on the underside of the moss shoots), even on plastic and glass panes overgrown with algae, which makes it very suitable for decorating wood and rocks it can be tied to with the help of a nylon line. A Hamburg mat filter is also a very nice substrate for this plant. It doesn't take long for this moss to cover such a filter entirely, converting it into an attractive feature in an aquarium. It is also possible to create a beautiful moss carpet in the foreground of the tank even if the light intensity is low.

T. barbieri can be trimmed to shape with a pair of scissors without sulking. If it grows too fast you can thus easily control it. Its propagation is as easy - simply cut off a portion. It is also a great hideaway for fish larvae. Mosses have gained popularity in aquaria in the wake of the shrimp boom. They provide these crustaceans not only with protection, but also with a richly laid table as their large surface is home to various microorganisms and detritus.

*Pictures are not the actual plants you will receive, but a sample representation.

Care

Easy

Usage

Epiphyte (growing on hardscape), Plant for spawning, Nano tanks

Light

Low

Co2

Not necessary but beneficial

Growth rate

Medium

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0264/1382/6106/products/taxiphyllum-barbieri-javamoos-wabi-kusa-mat-9-x-9-cm.jpg?v=1739858279
juncus-repens
Juncus repens

Juncus repens, the lesser creeping rush, is the only representative used in aquaria so far. Also suitable for a garden pond, and it tolerates the low salinity of a brackish water aquarium.

*Pictures are not the actual plants you will receive, but a sample representation.

Care

Medium

Usage

Nano tanks, Foreground, group, Foreground, ground cover

Light

Medium to High

Co2

Not necessary but beneficial

Growth rate

Medium

An attractive bottom covering plant with long light green grass-like leaves, it will spread out in thick carpet of grass. Lilaeopsis Novae-zelandiae propagates from the many runners that will branch off the root area. Its likeness to some Cabomba species makes it a coveted aquarium plant, as its light requirements are considerably lower. Given that there is sufficient light (0.5 watts per litre) and a CO2 injection L. sessiliflora grows more compact and looks more attractive. Balanced micronutrient fertilisation and the addition of iron is necessary for heathly growth. Lots of light and abundant micronutrients will result in a slightly reddish colouration of the shoot tips.

L. sessiliflora is trimmed like any other stem plant. Cutting off the top shoot and re-planting it into the substrate is the easiest propagation method. As soon as it reaches the water surface, L. sessiliflora starts forming a large number of lateral shoots. When growing along the surface, some of the shoots may become emersed, too. Its rapid growth makes regular trimming a must.

Its vitality and its unchecked longitudinal growth makes Limnophila sessiliflora primary a background plant.
