Azolla filiculoides
Azolla filiculoides
Azolla species are small, filigree floating ferns, occurring predominantly in the warm zones of the world. Azolla filiculoides is native to the Americas and introduced to other continents.
The Red Azolla or Large Mosquito Fern is able to form a floating mat in short time especially with strong lighting and nutrient-rich water, but it is also thriving under moderate lighting. Azolla filiculoides branches continually and propagates itself by fragmentation into smaller parts. As well as other floating plants, it has to be reduced occasionally to prevent the overgrowing of the water surface.
This floating fern looks very decorative especially in open tanks and well-lit paludariums. It removes excess nutrients from the water column, and its water roots provide shelter for baby fish. Azolla is able to grow not only on water but also on wet soil.
