Terrarium Clay Modelling Soil: Handcrafted in Brunei

Build, sculpt, and grow.

Modelling Soil is a premium, handcrafted clay substrate made for bell jar terrariums, moss walls and planted displays in Borneo’s humid tropical climate. Unlike generic potting mixes, it’s a purpose-built sculpting clay that holds its shape on vertical glass, anchors fine roots firmly, and feeds your plants as they establish.

What makes it different

A proprietary blend of natural clay and organic nutrients, hand-mixed in small batches and tested in Brunei’s tropical conditions. No synthetic additives and no artificial binders. The organic nutrient blend gives plants slow-release nutrition from day one, so you don’t need a separate adhesive and soil.

What you can make with it

  • Moss wall backing pressed directly onto jar glass
  • Sculpted mounds, ridges and hills as base terrain
  • A planted base layer for tropical plants, small ferns and jewel orchids
  • Wabikusa-style planted balls for display jars and open terrariums

Plants that do well in it

  • Creeping figs: Ficus quercifolia (oakleaf creeping fig) and Ficus pumila
  • Mosses and liverworts
  • Small ferns, including Adiantum in high humidity
  • Fittonia, Selaginella, baby’s tears (Soleirolia), small Peperomia and Pilea
  • Rooted plantlets and cuttings of pothos and philodendron

Not suited to succulents, cacti or other plants that need dry roots and fast drainage.

Coverage guide

Size Covers
75 g 1 back wall — 11 cm bell jar (thin coat)
150 g 1 back wall — 11 cm bell jar (standard 1 cm coat)
200 g 2 bell jar back walls
500 g 3–4 bell jar back walls

How to use

  1. Add water gradually and mix to a thick, pliable consistency, like firm peanut butter. It should hold a clean thumbprint without cracking or sliding.
  2. Press firmly onto the glass or shape it into your terrain.
  3. Let it set for 10-15 minutes, then press in your moss or plant roots and firm the clay around the base.
  4. Mist to keep it moist while roots establish.

Planting tips

  • Plant shallow, with the crown just above the surface.
  • Keep the surface lightly moist, not waterlogged, for the first couple of weeks.
  • Give your build some airflow, because the natural nutrients are happiest in an open or vented setup.

Which one should I choose?
For planting and growing, choose Modelling Soil. For sealed jars and closed terrariums where you want the lowest mould risk, choose Modelling Clay. Both are for use above the waterline, not for submerged areas.

Made in Brunei Darussalam. Small batch. Handcrafted.
